Free Birds

In a year that has delivered quite a few special animated films, such as Frozen, Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University, it would take quite a lot to stand out. Unfortunately, this film doesn’t have the necessary witty script or fun, but it does have nice animation and a promising voice cast (including Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler and Keith David) that enables it to, when looked at on its own, be an entertaining enough film. The plot is insane and there’s only really a few funny moments but on the whole, it manages to entertain enough for its 90 minute running time.

The story begins with Reggie the turkey (voiced by Owen Wilson) taken from his farm to live with the President as the “pardoned turkey” at the Thanksgiving season, only to be taken away by crazy fellow turkey Jake (voiced by Woody Harrelson) who takes him in a time machine to the first Thanskgiving in history to take turkeys off the menu.

It’s an utterly bizzare concept that leaves you with no idea where it came from, in a slightly similar way to Space Jam (which I discovered after much confusion and research was based on TV adverts from the era of its release), but strangely it sort of works. There isn’t much to laugh at and the story seems stretched but the voiceovers and animation help to keep things entertaining enough.
